How a R149/month VoIP solution transformed our small business communications — and saved everyone's sanity.
VoIP Blog

When you start a business, you do everything yourself. You answer calls on your personal phone, you burn through your own data, and you tell yourself it's fine because you're building something. And it is fine — until it isn't.

The moment you start hiring people, a quiet awkwardness sets in. Can you really expect your staff to use their own phones and data to do their jobs? To call clients, suppliers, and the inevitable gauntlet of hold music that stands between you and any government department? That's not a perk of the job. That's an HR problem waiting to happen.

So we did something about it.

Enter: VoIP

We applied for a VoIP solution through Vox and landed on a 3CX-based setup. Here's what we got for a base cost of R129.57 ex VAT (R149.01 incl. VAT) per month:

  • 10 extensions — enough for a proper team
  • An app on every PC — your computer becomes a fully functional office phone
  • An app on every phone — your personal number stays personal; the office number travels with you
  • Uncapped calls to all South African destinations — no more watching the clock while you're on hold

That last point deserves a moment of appreciation. Uncapped. To all South African destinations. For R149 a month.

The Hold Music Revelation

I'll be honest — the thing that sold me on this more than anything else was the headset.

I no longer pick up my personal phone to call a call centre. I put on my headset, dial through 3CX, and endure the dreary hold music in relative comfort while continuing to type, make coffee, or stare out the window in quiet despair.

My phone stays in my pocket. My personal airtime stays intact. My dignity remains more or less intact.

It is, in a word, brilliant.

What It Actually Costs to Call Someone

If you need to make calls beyond the included bundle, Vox's SIP trunk rates for calls to South African destinations run at roughly R0.44 to R0.46 per minute — competitive by any standard, and a fraction of what most mobile rates work out to when you're making business calls all day.

Your Staff Can Actually Do Their Jobs Now

This is the part that matters most. When your team has a proper phone system, they stop improvising. They stop using WhatsApp for things that should be a phone call. They stop avoiding calls because they're watching their data. They just... work. Professionally. Like the business you're trying to build.

3CX is the engine running underneath all of this — a well-regarded PBX platform that handles routing, extensions, apps, and call management. Vox supplies the SIP trunk (the actual phone line connecting you to the outside world).

Together, they're a proper business phone system that happens to cost less than a tank of petrol per month.

A Word on Numbers

We weren't porting any existing numbers — we didn't have landline numbers to port. Vox assigned us an 014 number, likely because we're based near Rustenburg. Geographic numbers are alive and well, it turns out.

If you do have existing numbers you want to bring across, number porting is supported — we just haven't needed to go down that road yet.

The Bottom Line

What You Get Cost
10 Extensions Included
3CX App (PC + Mobile) Included
Uncapped Calls to SA Destinations Included
Monthly Total (Incl. VAT) R149.01

For any business with more than one person answering a phone, this is a no-brainer. It's professional, it's affordable, and it means your staff are no longer quietly subsidising your business communication costs with their own data contracts.

Which, when you think about it, is the very least they deserve.
